TOKYO — Actor-singer Manabu Oshio was sentenced at the Tokyo District Court Monday to 18 months in prison, suspended for five years, for using the synthetic drug MDMA.

But the high-profile case is not yet over as police continue to investigate the death of a woman he took the drug with at an apartment in Tokyo on Aug 2, with the possibility of pressing negligence charges against Oshio, 31.

‘‘Oshio has close ties with drug users and has a strong tendency to use drugs,’’ Judge Osamu Iguchi said in handing down the sentence.

Noting that Oshio ‘‘should be given a chance to rehabilitate himself,’’ the judge said he should be monitored for an extended period so he cannot access drugs again. Five years is the maximum term of suspension.

Oshio pleaded guilty to using a small amount of MDMA on Aug 2, and prosecutors had sought an unsuspended sentence, saying Oshio was a habitual drug user as he told investigators he took MDMA in the United States two years ago and also this March and July.

But the trial revealed no details surrounding the death of 30-year-old Kaori Tanaka, who allegedly took MDMA with Oshio.

Oshio told investigators that when Tanaka fell unconscious some 30 minutes after taking the drug, he tried to revive her by giving a heart massage but did not call an ambulance.

Tanaka was confirmed dead after Oshio’s manager, who arrived at the scene several hours later, called an ambulance.
